The Old Pecan Tree

Out back, by the old orchard, stands a very big and very tall old pecan tree.
This year the tree put on a lot of pecans because of the rain we had this summer. In order to reach the tree we had to mow a path through the weeds.
And then we had to clear out all the weeds and branches under the tree.
High winds yesterday made it possible for us to begin gathering pecans.
However, we had to move quickly as it seems the dogs like eating pecans as much as we do.
With in a few minutes Elizabeth and I gathered a small basket of nuts.
These will be used for a delicious pecan pie to be served next week.

Feeding A Crowd

In one of our co-op groups the kids have been learning manners and at our next get together we will be eating a 4-course meal during our lunch hour. My contribution to the meal will be soup, not just a crock pot of soup but a stock pot of soup.Thank goodness I have several jars of canned potatoes sitting on my shelves. However, I did have to peel each potato section since I wasn't sure everyone would want skins in their soup.
I normally make potato soup with chicken broth but I didn't have any so instead I used some ham broth I had in the freezer; the end result was so good I may have to start using ham broth from now on.
Now I need to decide if I want to thicken the soup. If I use flour it will change the taste.
I may try instant potatoes, which I read on line works well, but I never buy instant potatoes so hopefully, if I give it a try, it will work without changing the flavor.

My New Pot

For the past several years I have been looking for a nice large heavy pot with a metal handle. On Saturday, while garage sale hopping, I found just what I have been looking for at the bargain price of 3-dollars.
I even had an old enamel lid that fits the pot perfectly; I'm not sure how I ever lived without this pot!

Another Pin Cushion

In one of my scrap boxes I found some cute canvas fabrics and made a simple 9-patch pincushion.I made it a little too big so the pin cushion looks more like a miniature pillow
I like the thickness which keeps the pins from poking out the back;
But I'm not sure if I'll use it or not since Elizabeth thinks it's cute and wants to keep it for herself.

Elizabeth's Quilt pt. 3

As I have been gathering pink clothes for Elizabeth's quilt I began thinking this is the perfect time for Elizabeth to learn about cutting with scissors and learning how to use a sewing machine. So, during one of Jo Ann's sales I purchased some spring loaded scissors for her to use and look at the color, pink!
So far the scissors are working out great.
She has been so excited about cutting but at the same time so afraid to make a mistake. I keep reassuring her we have lots of clothes so making a mistake is okay.......but I have a feeling my little girl is a perfectionist!

The Governor

Last week Rick Perry was in town.
We just happened to be in town at the same time so I took Elizabeth to see who he was.
It was hard to see since we were standing in the back but once all the speeches were over we were able to get a closer look.
And a photo.
I don't think Elizabeth understood too much but it made for a fun "government" lesson.

Thrifted Chair

Look how cute this chair is. It was only 3-dollars!
We have sanded, and sanded, and sanded. After the first sanding I was ready to give up but oh how I am glad we kept on going.
It's silky smooth to the touch and ready for the stain to be applied.
