King Quilt pt. 13

Today I finished the last of the quilting; all I lack is the binding!!The texture is so amazing!
The quilting is in no way perfect, in fact I have many mistakes as well as several folds and puckers throughout, but the size and beauty over shadow my imperfections. It's hard to believe I am almost finished.

King Quilt pt. 12

Once I had the "stitch in the ditch" completed I needed to decide how I wanted to do the quilting. I was tempted to stitch a big "X" in each square so I could finish quickly but after all the time spent on making the blocks I wanted to do the quilting properly. So after much thought I decided to do a stipple/meandering stitch and boy am I glad I decided not the go the "lazy" way; the texture of the quilt feels wonderful and each time I complete a block I get excited about how nice the quilt is turning out.
As I work on the quilt there are 2-needed necessities; one being my quilter's gloves. These gloves really make a big difference when moving the quilt under the needle/foot of my machine. I have pretty much wore out the rubber dots on these glove and will need to replace these with a new pair by the time I have finished the king quilt.
And my second necessity is a pair of reading glasses. It seems the older I get the more I have been relying on them.
If I continue at my present pace I may have the quilting completed later next week and ready for the binding. Hummm, this may be a dream but then again setting goals really makes a difference in helping accomplish projects.

Seasonal Sewing

This time of year I'm usually busy making pioneer dresses for young girls. I have always used Elizabeth as my model and I love going back and seeing how much she has changed from the beginning. She looks so little in the earlier photos.
Such a natural model if you ask me.
I like putting her hair in braids to add to the look of the costume.
Most of the time she likes to model but not always; sometimes she gets impatient while I try to snap enough pictures.
It sure is nice having my own personal model.

King Quilt pt. 11

The quilting has begun. To start with, because of the size, I am using my walking foot to stitch in the ditch around each block.
I can already tell this quilt is going to be a challenge.
It's so big and bulky I may regret trying to quilt this myself.

King Quilt pt. 10

When I started the King Quilt, back in February of 2009, I had no idea it would take me so long to finish. One of my biggest delays has been finding a second sheet to match the first sheet; sadly I was not able to, instead I have settled on an animal print sheet that looks nothing like the first except it's dark and better than a pink floral sheet. My second problem was where to go for pin basting the quilt. I do not have a floor large enough to lay out a king size quilt unless I empty a room of all its furniture. I thought perhaps the library would let me use one of their big empty meeting room but they wanted $25. My second thought was the Garden and Arts Center but they wanted $45 per hour to use one of their empty rooms. My last hope was our local Mardel Christian Book Store. In the past I was able to use their conference room for teaching sewing classes at no charge. Thankfully the room was available, at not cost, and I now have the quilt pin basted and ready to begin quilting.

Day Trip to a Canyon

Last week Elizabeth and I hit the road again for another day trip. Our destination was Quitaque; population 432...plus the pretty deer that walked right in front of us while we were driving.Just outside Quitaque is Caprock Canyons State Park.
This was our first time to visit this canyon.
We saw pretty flowers everywhere, as well as grasshoppers and butterflies.
The canyon is really pretty and very wide.
And it was so quiet.
This day trip was well worth our time and I am looking forward to our next trip.
