What Can a Dollar Buy?

I have heard many people say "You Can't Buy Much With A Dollar Anymore"....here is what I bought with a dollar.A vintage scrap quilt.
The texture of this quilt is amazing.
I love all the vintage fabrics this quilt has been made with.
The quilt has some worn spots here and there.
I so love how the whole quilt has been hand quilted.
Sometimes a dollar can buy a lot.

Hidden Tomatoes

This morning I managed to move half of the tomato plants into the garden...poor little things, they look so pitiful when first moved.
Last week, while pulling weeds, we noticed some of the weeds looked like tomatoes and upon closer inspection we discovered they were tomatoes! We have one very large tomato plant growing in the middle of the carrots;
Several plants growing in the onions;
Another very large tomato plant growing in between two lettuce plants;
A tomato plant growing beside the spinach;
And beside the broccoli;
And a small tomato plant just beginning to grow right next to a turnip.
Apparently when the chickens took over the garden last year they scattered tomato seeds everywhere. But that's OK with me, it's exciting discovering them in unexpected places!

Another Look in the Garden

I planted my green beans in between the potatoes soon after learning the mechanic wasn't going to get the tractor up and running as quickly as we needed.
The broccoli I planted is really growing; this is my second time trying to grow it. The chickens ate the plants last year before they got very big so we never even had a chance to eat any.
One of the turnips was big enough to pick but it didn't taste like I remembered growing up; it taste similar to a radish but I'm not sure if I will eat anymore.
I am still behind on all that I want to do in the garden but it's getting there; I hope to move my tomato plants outdoors this weekend and I still need to plant jalapeno and bell peppers.

Coupon Tip

My notebook system is working well for my coupons with one small problem. The baseball card pages are sometimes too small for over sized coupons.
To solve this problem I took a page protector and divided it into 3 sections and stitched the dividing lines on my sewing machine.
I then took scissors and carefully cut a slit in each section.
My oversize coupons, as well as my printable coupons, now fit better and are easier to see.
Sewing the page protectors took a little time but was well worth it.

Ready for Jelly Season

Many years ago I stumbled upon a truly awesome bargain...Sure Jell for 50-cents a box. I bought all the store had and stored it in the fridge. Last year I used the last of my Sure Jell and was desperate to replace it with another bargain.
My next bargain happened recently while I was shipping at Wal-Mart. I found double packs of Sure Jell marked on clearance for $2 a pack which comes out to $1 per box; not as good as the 50-cent a box but still a great deal.
Sure Jell tends to be the most expensive part of making jelly so I am happy to once again be well stocked for the next several years.

Weeds, Weeds and More Weeds

The orchard is full of weeds, weeds and more weeds.
Which is good for my hens since I have had them fenced off from the orchard for sometime.
They are loving all the weeds and extra room to roam; up until now they were only let out into the yard in the evenings for about an hour or so.
Now they will be able to feast on green all day.

The Big Day

The big day has arrived, the packing is finished, the loading complete. We spent 2-weeks buying new clothes and gathering supplies needed for the internship. I have been trying to focus on the positive;

He will be coming back home before fall classes begin.

He parted with all of us excited about the internship.

He wasn't leaving because he is tired of us.

He isn't running away from home.

He loves us and we love him, what more could we ask for.

Coupon Deal...Not a Deal

After reading about people saving money on eating out, by using restaurant (dot) com, I decided to give it a try. According to a "new to me blog" I could buy a $25 gift certificate for $10; and if I used a special promotional code I could get an additional $6 off; for a total of $4 out of pocket. I searched the restaurant (dot) com web site and learned that in my area there are not a lot of restaurant choices. However, there was a certificate available for a restaurant called Zoo-Kini's that I had heard of but never tried. According to the guide lines, set by the restaurant, I would need to spend a minimum of $35 before my coupon would work. I figured $35 less $25 would mean my meal would cost me $10 plus tip and the $4 I paid for my certificate (this is more than I normally pay for a meal for me and the kids but I thought it would be fun to give it a try).
My meal ended up costing me $19.05 plus the $4 certificate cost for a grand total of $23.05. Way too much money to pay for lunch for 3 people! (I know to some this would be normal but I only spend large amounts of money like this when company comes from out of town).
It turned out the restaurant added on an 18% tip! I do not ever leave an 18% tip! Ever!
Lesson learned, I do not think I will try this again; instead I will stick to the coupons available in the paper and in the phone book.
Are you wondering if we liked the food? It was "ok"...they were no where near as good as Chili's!

What do you See

Elizabeth: Mommy look what I made.
Mommy: Is it a "triangle"?
Elizabeth: No.
Mommy: Humm, I don't know.
Elizabeth: It's a "piano"!
Mommy: Oh yes, now I see all the keys!

Hilling Potatoes

"Many hands make light work"....I heard this quote on Adventures in Odyssey and it is so true. We all went out to the garden last night and hilled the potatoes.Then we packed the plants with cotton burrs. The work was tiring but satisfying.
It's nice being able to use the cotton burrs in the garden, we have been slowly making a dent in our huge pile.
As we reached the bottom of one end of the cotton burr pile we noticed it has already begun breaking down and turning into dark rich compost!

Garden Update

Currently our garden is doing well;Especially our potatoes; but sadly we have not been able to add to the garden.
The area, where we want to plant our corn and green beans, is covered in winter wheat that is thick and lush because of our wonderful rain.
Our poor tractor is currently in a "non-working" state. Hopefully the mechanic will be able to come and work on it soon.

We need the tractor to disk up a section of the winter wheat because it is too thick to do by hand. It's amazing how important a tractor is; when it's not working little gets done.

Vintage Lamp

For the past few years we have been making do with a cheap floor lamp while I have been searching for a vintage floor lamp in my price range.
Our cheap lamp has been on its last leg for the past couple of months so I was excited to find a nice vintage lamp today at the thrift store.
The lamp was priced $10. Although a good price for a vintage lamp I wasn't sure I wanted to fork out the money. The lamp is nice but not everything I was looking for. I wanted a heavy base, the base was heavy; I wanted a sturdy pole; the pole was sturdy. I wanted a thick pole; the pole isn't as thick as I wanted; and I wanted a glass shade; the lamp came without a shade. While I was mulling over my requirements a lady at the thrift store came over and told me all the lamps were on sale for $5. My mind was made up!

A New Dress for Elizabeth

Elizabeth loves to wear dresses so I have been searching for a fun summer style dress that would be comfortable and modest at the same time.
I found a pattern for a peasant style dress but it was "sold out"; so I improvised.
I took a peasant blouse pattern, added two rows of gathered fabric and "presto"; a perfect peasant style dress! I like this style of dress and plan to make her a couple more.

What a Movie

We recently watched the movie Julie and Julia. The movie was so good and so funny! I now feel the need to read about Julia Child; thankfully the local library had her biography.
