Baking Powder Biscuits

Over the years I have learned that a recipe is more than just ingredients; it is also technique. So as I was reading the instructions in my new vintage cookbook for baking powder biscuits I decided to make the biscuits by hand instead of using my mixer.
I even dug out my biscuit cutter so they would be round. When the timer went off and I pulled out the pan here is what I found; tall biscuits!
I promptly added some margarine to one and my oh my it was so good!
Then I added some homemade apple jelly to one of the biscuits; such a sweet success!
The recipe:
2 cups flour
2/3 cup milk
2 TBS. shortening
4 tsps. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
Cut shortening into sifted dry ingredients. Add liquid to make a soft dough; using more milk if needed. Roll lightly or pat into a sheet, cut into rounds. Place on a greased pan. Bake 450 degrees F. 12-15 minutes.

Yep! This is what I make while at the farm and cooking over the wood stove. Pamela and I will do everything by hand. We'll even use an antique tea cup to cut the bicuits. YUM!

Glad you're having fun with the cookbook. Are they saying OLEO instead of butter?

Pat,
Please help! I am a new englander and all around "city girl" who dreams of Laura Ingalls Wilder. Anyhoo, I came home from work and wanted to make the biscuits with my pork chops for dinner. They didn't rise, they came out like saltines! What did I do wrong? I mixed them by hand, no mixer. I did not let the dough rest before I cut the biscuits and I did not sift the flour. Do you think this had anything to do with how disasterous they came out? I would love some help, it is an easy recipe and my hubby loves biscuits. He saved them to dunk in his soup but they really were awful. thanks, christi crp1385@comcast.net

That's the same recipe I use! My mom always made them growing up. I love 'em!
